In the Rambam's Mishna Torah on the subject of charity, he divides the topic into eight levels. The highest level and form of charity is that of creating or providing an opportunity of livelihood for others.
For many of us in Israel, www.shopinisrael.com and all the volunteers are angels of light. At a time when many of us in Israel could not see past the darkness, you were there. It was such a tough time and such a helpless situation.
For us, it wasn't just the issue of Parnassa (livelihood). It was much more the feeling of being supported and cared for from afar. It was the feeling that we weren't being deserted, that you all cared.
What is so amazing is that this is not just another Jewish organization project. It is a simple, straight forward idea made real by a bunch of wonderful people. So those of us in Israel would like to thank you and everyone involved and all the people who shop on the site. Thank you for everything. We are surely one of your smallest “merchants”, but thank you for caring! I think that this site is an inspired idea. As half of a very poor “pensioner” kibbutz couple ShopInIsrael has provided us with exposure that we could not otherwise afford. In these days when kibbutzim are struggling to support the aged founding members every cent counts. You are surrounded by our gratitude! Previous to being listed with ShopInIsrael we were able to sell only to friends, or by an occasional word of mouth recommendation. In 2002 we had a pleasing response. Our site was first put on-line in late 2000. I think we received one or two orders in 2001. After joining Shop In Israel we had 18 (Chai!) orders, providing about income. Shop in Israel is a wonderful web site that has been doing a fantastic job of connecting people who want to help Israelis survive economically through this very difficult time with a real practical way of doing this. By providing links to hundreds of businesses throughout Israel to people who are looking for a special gift or product, they have given a great boost economically to small Israeli merchants who are struggling to provide for their families.
On a personal level, our small harp business was doing well during the times of great tourism during the 80's and early 90's, but when the 'bottom dropped out' a few years ago, we began to feel the dark strains of real trouble financially. It was truly a godsend when someone sent our link to shopinisrael and they put us on their website. We have no way of knowing where many of the people who buy our harps and doorharps are coming from or how they heard of us, but I know that many of them have come to us this way through shopinisrael.
The other thing that is really special about shopinisrael is that there is no charge for this wonderful service, a real boon for people who are already so strapped economically. We have tried to contact other sites that are a sort of spin-off of their site and found that unfortunately many of them are only trying to take advantage of an already bad situation by charging a large percentage for their 'service', not being a help to anyone but themselves, which is very sad and unfortunate.
All I can say is may Hashem continue to bless shopinisrael for awonderful idea and generous heart, with strength, health, protection, parnasa, and joy in the work that they are doing as they continue to support and encourage the people of Israel in these difficult times. The idea to help Israeli businesses during difficult times has been very helpful economically and also gave a very warm feeling that we are not alone in this hostile region. My Internet sales replaced partially my sales to the tourists before the intifada.
